Buckhead Church : Services Shoot

Wednesday, September 23rd, 2009

My wife and I have been going to Buckhead Church since we moved to Atlanta in 2003. The church, the people, the volunteers and the amazing speakers (Andy StanleyJeff Henderson, and more) have played a huge role in shaping our family over the years. We are so blessed to have a church like Buckhead…not to mention the kids’ programs, which are amazing and have our oldest Adler excited about church every weekend.

A year and a half ago I was hired to come and shoot images of Buckhead’s services. I spent a whole day coming to each of the services and the rehearsal. It was an awesome experience, and I learned a LOT about the inner workings of Buckhead and how they pull off 3 services almost entirely with volunteers. Needless to say, I couldn’t have been more excited, and honored to be asked again to shoot more images. In June, I shot images for North Point Online, but was restricted in that the interest of each photo really needed to be in the corners AND needed a different look and feel. This time around, I was just asked to shoot primarily the worship services and the production team so that the main website images could be refreshed.

It was a great day getting to shoot Carlos Whitaker and James David Carter…both super talented and great leaders. These are a few of my favorite images from the day.SHP_Buckhead09-6037SHP_Buckhead09-5958SHP_Buckhead09-6339SHP_Buckhead09-5858SHP_Buckhead09-5905SHP_Buckhead09-6221SHP_Buckhead09-4 SHP_Buckhead09-6642SHP_Buckhead09-6127SHP_Buckhead09-6511

Day 1

Thursday, August 6th, 2009

So, if you’ve been following this blog, you know that I’ve been full-time as a photographer since May 1st.  These are a couple images from May 1st, when I was fortunate enough to shoot some appliance images for The Home Depot.    3 of these images ended up being used very quickly for a huge digital billboard in NYC, which is more than a little exciting for me…the new guy on the streets.

It’s been a crazy ride over the last few weeks, feeling out everything and learning from everything I’ve had thrown at me. From successes, to mistakes, to praises and critiques, I’ve taken everything with a grain of salt so far and have just tried to learn from all of it. After years and years of working my way to a college scholarship as a tennis player, I’ve always had the perspective of learning to be better…regardless of how good you are or aren’t. If someone tells you what’s wrong with your backhand…fix it. Photography and the business that goes along with it is no different. I can’t and won’t know everything there is to know overnight, so I’m just taking it one step at a time and listening to the people who are helping me be better, even if they don’t know they are…

So thanks to all of the producers, art buyers and reps out there that have met with me, responded to emails or shared my work with others. Thanks for helping someone that’s not well known or in the “in crowd”, (yet…hopefully) but who’s passionate about this business and about being better.

North Point Online is LIVE

Thursday, July 30th, 2009

A month or so I was able to work with North Point Ministries to shoot some images for their new online project North Point Online.  Basically, they needed some images of Buckhead Church that would help make the site sorta feel like you were walking around Buckhead Church on your way to the service. Eventually, the images will probably rotate which will be pretty coolio.

The site is live now, but the first official service will be held on August 16th and from then on, every Sunday during the 6pm ET service, people all over the world will be able to attend Buckhead Church and hear from our amazing pastor Andy Stanley, as well as our other amazing pastors such as Jeff Henderson…seriously, how lucky am I to get to hear these guys speak in person?!  Well, now you’ll be able to experience the entire service online, so check it out!  It’s a really amazing site, that’s pretty much the first of it’s kind.

I’m constantly amazed at our church and how creative they are!  Thanks to North Point and Buckhead Church for letting me participate in something bigger than ourselves!  I feel truly blessed to be a small part of NP Online.

So…for the photography, it was an interesting challenge because (as you’ll see) the video and content pretty much takes up the majority of the screen, so I took on this project with the intention of putting the interest of the photography in the corners, at the bottom, and away from the center of the photographs where it would usually be blocked by the video.  I hope you like ‘em…

Check out NP Online (here) and follow them on twitter (here).

Last Shoot of 2008 – Looking forward to 2009

Thursday, December 11th, 2008

2008 has officially come to a close for SHP. My next shoots will be in 2009, and it’s nice to have a break from shooting, although I’ve got well over a thousand images left to go through for the three shoots I had last weekend. I went to St. Augustine, FL for Arin’s wedding and had a blast with a really fun group. The next day I was able to book a family shoot (complete with 2 labs) and ended up with some fun images, although getting the dogs in the shots was a bit challenging.

One of the best parts of the weekend was getting to stay at a great B&B on the beach for the price of taking pictures of the place. It was amazing. The owner was so gracious, a great cook, and really fun to talk to. We’ll definitely go back some time, just to hang out there. Here are a couple teaser pics from the weekend.

2009 is going to be an exciting year. From having our second son in February, to a total redesign of my site and blog. I’m still just working on a “plan”, but will be excited to get moving on some new things in the photography world.

Hope all’s well with you and yours. Merry Christmas! and God Bless.
